Deschutes National Forest has some fantastic winter scenery, and the only way to see some of it is by heading out into the backcountry on a snowmobile. There are about 150 miles of groomed snowmobile trails that take you out around the high lakes area and can be accessed by the Edison Snow Park, Wanoga Snow Park or the Dutchman Flat Snow Park. During the winter time, Century Drive is closed to traffic at Mount Bachelor and open to snowmobiles. Along this stretch of Century Drive west of Mount Bachelor, is the Elk lake Resort which during winter can only be accessed by snowmobile or snowcat. The resort is located on Elk Lake and has cabins you can rent along with a restaurant and general store.
Newberry Crater near La Pine is another great snowmobiling spot. The roads into and around the crater are close to traffic in the winter, so snowmobilers have the place to themselves. There are over 100 miles of snowmobile trails in and around the crater including a route up to the top of Paulina Peak. The trails can be accessed by either 6-mile or 10-mile snow park located along Road 21 which takes you from Highway 97 up to Paulina Lake.
